Uniform and Handbook

uniforms

Each scout needs a uniform and the appropriate handbook for their rank – Tiger, Wolf, Bear or Webelos.

Class A Uniforms

Every scout should have a Class A uniform to wear to all Pack and Den Meetings as well as most Pack events. For some of our more active Pack events such as hiking, scouts are allowed to wear a Class B uniform.

  • Cub Scout Shirt
    • Tigers, Bears, and Wolves – blue Cub Scout shirt (short sleeved)
  • Webelos – Tan Boy Scout shirt (short sleeved);
    • Shoulder Loops for Webelos Tan Shirt
    • Blue epithets or shoulder loops

Patches for Cub Scout Shirt

  • World Scout Crest Emblem (round purple fleur de lis) – scout needs to purchase (goes top left above pocket)
  • Right sleeve – top to bottom
  • American Flag – comes on uniform
  • Den # – scout needs to purchase
  • Mt Diablo Silverado Council Patch – scout needs to purchase
  • Pack 996 numbers – scout needs to purchase

Belt

  • Tigers, Bears, and Wolves – blue Cub Scout belt (Academics and Sports belt loops fit on this belt)
  • Webelos – can wear either the blue Cub Scout belt or the dark green Boy Scout belt (note that the Academics and Sports belt loops do not fit on the Boy Scout belt)

Pants/shorts

  • Pack 996 typically does not require uniform pants or socks – i.e., scouts do not need to purchase official pants at the scout store
  • Athletic shorts or pants are not allowed. All shorts/pants should have belt loops.
  • Tigers, Bears, and Wolves – blue shorts or pants; jeans are appropriate for most events
  • Webelos – either blue shorts or pants if wearing the blue Cub Scout shirt or olive green shorts or pants if wearing the tan Boy Scout shirt; jeans are appropriate for most events
  • For some Pack events such as the 4th of July parade and events with Boy Scout troops, jeans are not allowed (each Pack event should clearly state what the uniform requirements are for that event)

  • Orange for Tigers
  • Yellow for Wolves
  • Blue for Bears
  • Plaid for Webelos

Locations to Purchase Class A Uniform and Handbook

It is highly recommended that new scouts purchase their initial uniform at an official BSA scout store – either the one in Pleasant Hill (preferred location since it is the store for our council) or San Leandro (note that this store may not have the Mt Diablo Silverado Council patch). The personnel in these stores are very nice and are used to helping new families purchase their uniforms!

Pleasant Hill Scout Shop (800 Ellinwood Way, Pleasant Hill)

Since this is the official BSA shop for our council, they are most likely to have everything you need and they have staff that can answer your questions.

They also have a service (for a fee) that sews on the patches for you. See “Patch Placement” section below for a recommendation for a local place that sews on the patches.

East Bay Scout Shop (1001 Davis Street, San Leandro)

Since this is an official BSA store, they should have everything you need except they likely do not have the Mt Diable Silverado Council pathc (since this store is associated with another council). The staff will be able to answer all of your questions.

McCaulou’s (589 San Ramon Valley Blvd, Danville)

Inventory is more limited and prices are higher than the official BSA stores, but it is very convenient.

Do not expect staff to be able to answer any uniform questions.

Online

You can shop online, but it is difficult to get everything you need online and you cannot see the shirt sizes.

It is a good place to go to see what the items you need to buy look like.

Patch Placement

See the front of your scout’s handbook or the ‘uniform’ section on www.pack996.org for the template that shows the correct placement of the patches for a Cub Scout uniform See below for a quick cheat sheet to the key patch locations:

  • World Scout Crest Emblem (round purple fleur de lis) – top left above pocket
  • Right sleeve – top to bottom
  • American Flag – comes on uniform
  • Den # – scout needs to purchase
  • Quality Unit Award – Pack 996 to provide once the Pack earns it (issued yearly)
  • Left sleeve – top to bottom
  • Mt Diablo Silverado Council Patch – scout needs to purchase
  • Pack 996 numbers – scout needs to purchase

Here is a local place that sews on the cub scout patches for about $2/patch. They are very knowledgeable with regards to patch placement and have the uniform templates available in the shop for reference. The official BSA scout stores also provide this service, but the fee is a little higher.

Class B Uniform – Scouts and Leaders

Pack 996 sometimes allows scouts and leaders to wear a Class B uniform for active events such as hiking. The Class B uniform is the same as the Class A uniform except that the scout and leader can wear a Cub Scout or Boy Scout of America t-shirt instead of Class A uniform shirt (available from the scout store). If the scout does not have a t-shirt with scout logos, he may wear a plain t-shirt with no sayings, logos, or pictures.

Pack 996 will be designing a t-shirt which should be available for sale in Fall 2012.
